Suffolk Confederate Monument

Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk VA

One of the strongest characteristics of Colonel Thomas Washington Smith was his loyalty and enduring friendship for the survivors of the Confederate War.

On November 14th 1889 a monument was dedicated in the Cedar Hill Cemetery to all Confederate Soldiers. It was erected by Thomas Washington Smith at his own expense. The guest of honor at the unveiling was Governor Fitzhugh Lee, who reviewed a parade featuring the Suffolk Grays, Cadets of the Suffolk Military Academy and the local Confederate Veterans group.
